Mini Book - Book Cover Template

Mini Book - Book Cover Template
$5.00

I created this file alongside of a 1:12 scale miniature book model intended for 3D printing.  This template was fitted to the model I designed; however, I got as close to the 1:12 scale as possible based on the information I could find.  I've seen many variations of this type of miniature book so if this one doesn't fit exactly, it should be very close and only need some slight tweaks to the template or trimming of the printed end product.

I included the original file formats from the software I used to create the template, Affinity Designer & Photo for anyone who uses those and would like to make tweaks.  I specifically wanted to make sure to include the SVG format since it's most compatible with packaged software (Cricut Design Studio for example) and other free and open-source software.  I've included a few other formats as well that I hope should only need some slight resizing for your needs if you don't use any of the above-mentioned software.

Template Specifications:

Number of items on the template 42
Template Document Size 8.5" x 11"
Measurement of each item in the template

1.7" x 1"

File Formats Included
  • svg
  • psd
  • aphoto
  • afdesign
  • png
  • pdf

Software Recommendations

The two major formats used for graphics design are Adobe Photoshop (.psd files) and Adobe Illustrator (.ai files).  Those, however, can be very expensive to use, so for those of us like myself that look for more cost-effective alternatives, we look to lower cost or free software offerings.  I've had classes in both Illustrator and Photoshop (albeit many years ago) and I subscribed to them for a while but eventually got tired of paying for it.  I've used alternatives like Inkscape and GIMP off and on throughout the years, but I just preferred the Adobe products workflows.  Make no mistake, GIMP and Inkscape are both very powerful tools if you take the time to learn them, but for most people who simply want to print something, those aren't really the best options, in my opinion.  I learned about the Affinity products a few years ago and bought them almost immediately since they had an option to pay one time for lifetime access and use.  Plus, Affinity products work on both my Mac, PC, iPhone, and iPad.  Thats for ME though since I like to design things periodically but not professionally.  If you're looking for a low-cost alternative that's fairly easy to learn, affordable, and strike a nice balance between power and price, they are a great option.  For those that are looking to simply open the template, drop in some images, print, and not spend a couple of evenings on YouTube trying to figure out how get things to work, I've tried to accommodate you as best as I and have done some high-level tests on some of these options I list below.  Note, while I'm listing many applications here, this is by no means an exhaustive list and if you ask several people, you'll get several answers, some of which will be very spirited, I'm sure.  Also, don't equate "free" with "bad".  You'd be surprised at how much of the world runs on "free" software.  Titles like GIMP and Inkscape are what's known as FOSS (Free and Open-Source Software) and are developed by volunteers, community members, and industry veterans.

Photoshop Alternatives

  • Affinity Photo (Installed, app stores, mobile, good balance of power and ease, great tutorials)
  • GIMP (Installed, app stores, higher learning curve, powerful)
  • Canva (browser, mobile)
  • Krita (installed, pc/mac app stores, higher learning curve, powerful)

Illustrator Alternatives

  • Inkscape (installed, pc/mac app stores), powerful, higher learning curve)
  • Vecteezy (requires account to save work)
  • Vectr (Browser only, easy to use, versatile)
  • Canva (not the best for this)

Software Caveats

  • Canva - I recommend using the .psd file.  I tested opening the other formats but the .psd worked the best and retained the template structure allowing you to easily edit each book cover item independently.
  • GIMP - need to set white background because of transparency
